Arne Jakobsen is beyond doubt one of the twentieth century's most noteworthy Danish architects. He is widely recognized internationally, and his furniture is highly valued both in Denmark and abroad.

Born in 1902, Arne Jacobsen was educated as a mason and received his diploma from the Technical Society's School in 1924. Additionally, he received his diploma from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1927. I 1928 he was awarded the schools gold medal, but already 2 years earlier, at the age of 23, he was awarded with a silver medal on the world exhibition in Paris. The silver medal in Paris was just the first of the numeral distinctions he received as a natural reward for his artistic activities and superb solutions.

Among his chief efforts is: The City Halls in Aarhus, Søllerød, Rødovre and Glostrup, The SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, The Danish National Bank, the gymnastics hall in Landskrona in Sweden, St. Catherine's College in Oxford, England and Hamburgerische Elektrizitätswerke's (the power plant in Hamburg) administrational building in Germany.

In the years from 1932 Arne Jacobsen, in cooperation with Danish designer Fritz Hansen, designed a series of chairs, which have come to represent milestones in the development of Danish furniture design. Known chairs include the famous "Egg", the "Ant" and the "Swan".

From 1956 to 1965 he was a professor at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and was appointed a doctorate of honour at several foreign universities and academies. His renowned "Cylinda-line" was awarded with the ID-award in 1967 by the Society of Industrial Design and with the International Design Award by The American Institute of Interior Designers in 1968.
